BEAUTIFUL SHELVES HANDCRAFTED BY SPECIALISTS
Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find the most common questions about our shelves. If you have a different question please don’t hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to help.
Are your shelves 100% solid hardwood?
Yes, only the world’s finest cuts of solid hardwood too – no knots, no splits, no shakes, no discolouration. Surprisingly, we still get asked this question an awful lot. The reason seems to be that many customers have been stung by online companies (and large DIY warehouses and supermarkets too) advertising ‘wooden shelves’ when they are nothing of the sort. They are often cheap softwood pine (usually stained to look like quality hardwoods) or MDF coated with a thin veneer of wood. At the very worst they are simply reinforced cardboard with a wood-effect laminate exterior. There is simply no comparison between these products and our genuine solid hardwood shelves that will last a lifetime.
What kind of bespoke work can you do?
Pretty much anything! Corners (rounded or clipped), edging styles and cable holes are the usual bespoke requests – which, unlike many competitors, we offfer completely free of charge. However, we can also produce biscuit-jointed L-shaped shelves to wrap around corners, oversized shelves (we have produced a rack of 3.5metre length shelves in the past) and we can rout small channels for plate display shelves or photograph shelves. For a small additional charge we can also produce bookends for your shelves or help rout out the channels or holes for LED lighting (including holes for the power cables). Whatever your individual requirements, the chances are that we can make it for you – just ask.
Can I put the shelves up myself? Is it easy?
If you can draw a straight line and drill holes into a wall (without hitting electrical cable or water or gas pipes!) then yes. Please have a look at our fitting instructions page for full step-by-step details before making your decision. We really have made things as simple as possible for you. Not only to erect the shelf yourself and save the cost of someone else doing it but also to help you get it perfectly straight.
I want a floating shelf wider than 30cm, is this possible?
This is a bit of a grey area and the decision must ultimately rest with you. Overall, we would advise you to use the wooden or chrome brackets for wall shelves wider than 30cm. The concealed brackets we supply for Floating Shelves sink 120mm (4-5 inches) into the shelf. Once the shelf exceeds 300mm (12 inches) there is a risk that over time the shelf will ‘droop’ down from the wall, as more than 18cm of the shelf is unsupported. This isn’t a massive issue with smaller shelves, or if you are displaying something very light or supporting a DVD player or satellite/freeview receiver for example. However, if you intend to put some weight on it, it will increase the risk.
For alcove shelves 300mm (12inches) to 450mm (17 inches), and corner shelves, we supply supporting battens instead of concealed brackets. These battens simply fix to the wall (plasterboard walls included). The three battens will support the rear and two ends of the shelf and the shelf simply sits on top of these battens. Although you will lose the ‘floating’ effect, the battens are still very discreet and offer solid support for even the heaviest loads.
How much weight can the shelf hold?
The heavy duty brackets we provide for Floating Shelves can easily withstand 35-40kgs. This includes the weight of the shelf, so please check with us if you want to know the weight of the shelf you are ordering. We provide 2 brackets for all shelves up to 1200mm. 3 brackets for shelves 1201-2000mm and 4 brackets for all shelves over 2metres.
Wall shelves using wooden or chrome brackets underneath the shelf, and our Alcove Shelves can hold even more weight. It is simply a case of securing the battens or brackets with the best screws and rawl plugs you can find. It is especially important to use specific plasterboard rawl plugs for plasterboard or dot n dab walls.
Can I put my television on a floating shelf?
If it is a modern LED flat-screen TV, then this is no problem at all. However, we strongly advise fixing the TV to the wall as well as it can still be easily knocked off by careering children, careless visitors, enthusiastic Wii players or emotional sports fans!
Can you produce thinner shelves?
Yes, no problem. We believe 44mm is the ultimate thickness for shelves. They are totally solid and look substantial. But we will gladly plane your shelf down to a minimum of 32mm thickness if that is what you require but anything less than this would make the shelf flimsy and unstable. We only believe in using the heaviest duty brackets for supporting wooden shelves and for this we drill a 14mm hole into the shelf. At 32mm thickness there would be 9mm of wood either side of the drill hole (top and bottom of the shelf). This is the absolute minimum that we would advise for a long-lasting secure shelf. We do not currently produce thicker shelves as there is very little demand for them.
Can you supply the shelf unfinished?
Yes, gladly. Simply request this in the ‘special requirements’ box when placing your order online or advise us if placing the order over the telephone. We understand that some customers wish to varnish or paint the shelves themselves. Varnish is certainly preferable if siting the shelves in a bathroom or other high-moisture environment. Please see answers further down this page regarding painting and staining wooden shelves.
Do you offer a staining service?
Yes, for all Oak shelves. As well as the usual Danish oil or Natural clear beeswax options, we also offer two different stains – Medium Oak or Dark Oak wax stains.
Can I paint my shelf?
Yes. We have supplied many shelves to customers who want a solid and stable hardwood shelf but wish to paint it to match the style of their room. We would normally supply shelves with 3 coats of protective oil or wax before despatch but paint will not hold onto an oiled surface so, when placing your order, please request that the shelf is supplied ‘unfinished’ or ‘unoiled’.
What is the delivery time?
Our average turnaround time from the day you place your order is 10-14 working days.
The reason for this lead time is because we craft every single shelf exclusively for each individual customer. It takes this time and care to produce a quality product – to select the timber, cut it to size, plane it, apply the corner and edging styles, rough sand, main sand, fine sand, pre-drill the bracket holes, apply three coats of protective oil, pass it through quality control, securely wrap it and despatch it.
Do you provide samples?
Sorry, we are unable to provide samples but there are good reasons for this. The main reason is that wood is a natural product and there are slight colour variations within a single plank of hardwood, within the same tree and differences from tree to tree. Quite simply, any small sample we send to you cannot be completely representative of the shade of colour that you would actually receive.
